Wondering to myself if I am trying for too much in my initial layout scribbles. Trying to keep it simple while including plenty of interchange possibilities that western Illinois and eastern Iowa provide. we have plenty of industry in this area to include on the BN side while having run through on the transcon SF side all in HO. Then I need to figure out how to put an O27 layout together in the other half of my basement without going broke. I was originally going to put the O27 above the HO layout but the better half of valor prevailed. If we were to have a derailment it could take out a whole city. The other line of thinking is that I could make a second level for the Transcon to runthrough from Chicago to Kansas City for intermodal traffic and unit trains with a mainline run of approximately 100 to 120 ft. Then I can run locals and coal trains on the level with interchange between BNSF and TZPR, BJRY UP, IAIS and DM&E. I can include a lot of varied power along with steam during railfestivals and excursions that my local amigos have fanned and worked so I can include my steam engines in the fun. The hard part will be modeling my home yard of Galesburg to my satisfaction. I will have a yard size of about 13 feet by 3 feet wide. My hope is to have plenty of operational capacity while not overdoing it. The scary part is they terminal is 57 tracks wide now, if I was to try to do it all it would not fit in my basement. The bowl will have to reduce in size dramatically, by at least half or more is my guess from 48 to probably 10 or 15 the r&d tracks from 8 to likely 3 or 4. The departure tracks from 6 tp 2 or 3. Quite possible no diesel shop. Who am I kidding, you gotta have a diesel shop! Well first thing first gotta clean the basement and finish it. So for now good night.
