MODELI NG MODERN BOX CARS
By Jim Eager
SOU 9079, series 9000-9 199, built in October and November 1960 The Southern was the first road to purchase modern single-sheathed box cars from Pullman. These early cars had 12 panels to either side of the door, flat plate ends, and smooth roof panels. Note the extended cushioned draft gear pocket, which gives these nominal 50-foot box cars a coupled length of 61 feet 3 inches. The lower part of the door has been repaired, very common on older sliding-door box cars. -D. Scott Chatfield photo, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, August 1993 H O Scale Decals: n one known
SOU 9218, series 9200-9499, built i n J u ne 1962 Southern 's second order had only seven panels to either side of the door and "sine wave" corru gated non-terminating ends. Otherwise, they have the same roof and dimensions as the first order. What look like eight small brackets at the top of the ends are actually vents. -D.
