M o d e l ra i l roaders, as a grou p, are n o t rea l l y a com petitive sort. Most a re content to practice their a rt i n the rel ative sec l u s i o n of their own homes or among members of a c l u b or. s i mi l a r l y-o riented friends. L i k e a n y a rtist, how ever, most modelers are j u stifiab l y proud of th eir creations even if the "creat ion" is si m p l y a snap-together kit that they 've added a touch of thi n ned down 'dirty' pa int to, to s i mu late the grime co m mo n to most real ra i l road equ i p ment. Some of the members of the model ra i l road fratern i t y , though , a re craftsmen i n the true sense of the word, fu l l y capable of ma k i ng a com p l ete steam l ocomotive f ro m a p i l e of brass rods and sheets. The mo delers most proud of their efforts often enter them in reg ional or model contests where they can be admi red by national

h u n d reds of a p preciative enth usiast and, perhaps, be j u dged by a panel of their peers to be the best of the show or at l east best in a particu l ar category. The m aj o rity of the active model rai l roaders belong to the Nationa l Model R a i l road Association ( m ore a bout this group appears i n the chapter on " C l u bs " ) . The N M R A div ides the co u ntry into geogra phic areas. Each of these a reas h as a regional branch of the c l u b that f u n ctions much l i k e a scaled-down version of the 'nationa l ' with an a n n u al meet i n g of the members a n d , usua l l y, a model contest for the me mbers with i n the region. Yo u can obta in the address of the secretary of your reg i o n , along with your a p p l i cat ion to the N M R A, from Box 1 328, Station C, Ca nton, O h io 44708. You may j u st want to. enter one of your most pri zed models in the next regional co ntest in your area .

The models pictu red here are the wi n n ers in the various categories of the N M R A 's contest program. These models, however, can fa irly be j u dged the best i n the coun try si nce they won their recognition at the N M R A's nation a l convention f o r 1 9 70 in S t . L o u i s , M o . T h e contest criteria makes poi nt-earned a l l owances 'for mo dels that h ave been com p lete l y scratchbu i l t' as we l l as k i ts - it is possib l e , th en, for a h ig h l y deta i l ed kit-bu i l t locomotive, car, or structure to win over a model that wa s scratch b u i l t from raw materi a l s . Most of th e win ners, h owever, were scratc h Q u i l t and t h e y are bea u tifu l i ndeed . For most of us, mode l s l i ke this are o n l y a dream; a goal we can work toward in o u r mode l i ng efforts - materi a l proof t h a t it rea l l y is possible to i ncorporate such deta il and real i s m in a mere h a nd fu l of mod el .
